As states wind down their legislative sessions, Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee has signed Senate Bill 2709 on medical debt credit reporting.
The act prohibits hospitals and other medical providers from reporting medical debt to credit reporting agencies (CRA).
Contracts for the purchase or collection of medical debt with a debt collector must include a provision that prohibits the reporting of any portion of medical debt to a CRA.
The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2025.
